  25.      CD-ROM drive
  26.  
  27.      The following describes configuring your system to run with NetWare Lite
  28.      and a CD-ROM drive:
  29.  
  30.      MSCDEX.EXE, the program provided from Microsoft to run a CD-ROM, assigns
  31.      a drive letter to the CD-ROM drive.  This can default to the next
  32.      available drive, or can be set to a specific drive with the /L:x
  33.      parameter, where x is the drive letter.  However, there are conflicts
  34.      between MSCDEX.EXE and CLIENT.EXE, a NetWare Lite file that is loaded to
  35.      make the machine a workstation.  A workaround some of these conflicts is
  36.      the following:

  38.      PREFERRED METHOD
  39.  
  40.      1.   Load CLIENT.EXE then run MSCDEX.EXE
  41.  
  42.      SECONDARY METHOD
  43.  
  44.      This has been known to solve some but not necessarily all CD-ROM drive
  45.      and NetWare Lite issues.  If PREFERRED METHOD fails and the workstation
  46.      was a CLIENT-only, it must be made a SERVER-CLIENT.
  47.  
  48.      1.   Run MSCDEX.EXE before CLIENT.EXE.  This will assign a drive letter
  49.           to the CD-ROM.
  50.  
  51.      2.   After running CLIENT.EXE, that drive letter is no longer directly
  52.           accessible by DOS.  Create a network directory that looks at the
  53.           drive through the network.  For example, if the /L:G parameter was
  54.           used in MSCDEX to assign the G: drive to the CD-ROM drive, then
  55.           create a network directory (Enter NET; select SUPERVISE THE NETWORK;
  56.           select NETWORK DIRECTORIES; press <Insert>; select your SERVER),
  57.           call it something like CDROM, and assign the "Actual directory path"
  58.           to be the G: drive.

  60.      3.   Then, when you map a drive to the network directory CDROM, even
  61.           though the G: drive is not accessible directly, you can access it as
  62.           a mapped drive.

  65.                For example:  NET MAP J: CDROM would map J: to the CDROM
  66.                network directory that will look at the physical drive G: that
  67.                MSCDEX.EXE assigned as the CD-ROM drive.
